When Is the Best Time to Buy a Mattress in Australia?

A good mattress is costly, and it would not make sense to purchase a new mattress in October and then find out that its price dropped in November. But there is a bright side to this story: in Australia, mattress sales are quite predictable. This guide will discuss when prices go down, when it actually takes place, how to distinguish an actual sale from a “ongoing” one, and what changes take place with your trial period.

The short answer

In Australia, there are only four sales periods when mattresses will cost the least: Black Friday at the end of November, Christmas in December, and the Boxing Day sales from December into January. The Black Friday and Boxing Day sales season is when you will find the largest discounts.

However, the best time to buy a mattress is when you need one. For example, if your bed is sagging or you experience body pains when you wake up, sleeping comfortably a few weeks sooner may be worth more than a few dollars saved on a sale.

When are mattresses cheapest?

Black Friday week in late November, Christmas in December and Boxing Day sales from 26 December into January see mattress prices drop.

Black Friday mattress sales (late November)

Black Friday occurs on Friday 27 November. However, in reality, most mattress brands online start their Black Friday offers a week or two before that, while some even start offering deals from the first days of November.

This is the period during which you will receive all kinds of freebies, such as pillows or mattress protectors, which may add up to a considerable amount in percentage terms.

Christmas mattress deals (December)

Christmas Day falls on Friday 25 December. Many brands run Christmas offers through December, and these often lead straight into pre-Boxing Day deals from mid-December.

Boxing Day mattress deals (26 December into January)

Boxing Day falls on Saturday, 26 December. Many brands start pre-Boxing Day offers in mid-December, and many Boxing Day sales run into January, giving you more shopping days.

However, there might be delays in shipping during the Christmas season. Make sure you check the delivery dates, as warehouses and couriers may be working at a slower pace from Christmas to New Year.

Are mattress sales real discounts? How to check

Some are, and others are not. A discount is only as good as the price it is discounted against. If you see that a mattress has been marked "55% off" throughout the year, the sale price is really nothing but the regular price.

This is supported by Australia's consumer law. Following the Australian Consumer Law, it is illegal to mislead the customers regarding the savings that are being made, and the increased "was" price must have been actually charged for the product before. The same is the case with urgency: a countdown timer or an "Ending soon" banner cannot be used where there is still more sale after that.

Here are steps on how to verify the discount on your own:

  • Check the price tag and not the percentage: Take the real price of the bed in question for the size you wish to buy several weeks before the sales season starts.
  • Check if the "was" price was ever there: If the mattress has never actually sold at the quoted "was" price, be careful with the deal.
  • Do not believe in countdown clocks: The sale that ends tonight but restarts tomorrow is a red flag.
  • Match the product you are buying to the product from the sale: Compare the sizes, models, and other similar details.
  • Think about the sum of additional things, such as a free pillow or a code for a discount.

Is it worth waiting for a sale?

It all comes down to how much money you'll save and how bad your sleep is currently.

A quality mattress will last many years (this article goes into detail about the typical life span of various mattresses). Saving $200 over those years, when averaged out, comes out to a small annual amount. It makes sense if your mattress isn't in too terrible of condition, but not if it means another six weeks of back pain.

Here's an easy way to determine what to do:

  • Painful or bad sleep from the mattress: buy it now at the lowest price available.
  • Uncomfortable, but not painful: wait until next sale if that happens to be only in a month or two.
  • Moving houses or setting up new rooms: buy according to your move date and get the best deal of the week.

If you're waiting due to costs, buying now and paying later can help stretch payments out. We take Afterpay and Zip payments.

Do sale mattresses get the same trial and warranty?

We at Wowbeds give you a trial of 120 nights, a 10-year warranty, and free standard delivery of all mattresses purchased from us.

Here's how the process unfolds:

  1. Let the mattress settle for 21 nights first. Your body needs time to adjust, especially if your old mattress was sagging, so please sleep on it for at least 21 nights before contacting us about a return.
  2. Contact us within the 120 nights. Write an email to support@wowbeds.com.au or call 1300 096 923.
  3. Charity partner picks it up. One of our local charity partners will contact you to arrange a suitable pickup time; please allow up to two weeks. The mattress is rehomed or, if that isn't possible, professionally recycled. If you live outside metro areas and main regional cities and no local charity can collect it, you'll need to drop it off at your nearest mattress drop-off point or one of our warehouses.
  4. Receive a full refund. Once pickup or drop-off is confirmed, we refund 100% of what you paid to your original payment method. This normally takes about four days.

A few conditions apply. The mattress must be clean and undamaged, with no stains, soiling, rips or tears, and suitable for collection by our charity partners. Only one mattress return is allowed per household, and please keep your original invoice. Bed frames are not part of the trial and can't be returned once opened.

This 10-year warranty covers major manufacturing or material defects. Any body impression of up to 3 cm within the comfort layer is considered normal and not a defect.

However, not all brands follow this protocol. So, when you're buying on sale from somewhere else, check the trial period policy first. Our guide on how to understand trial periods and warranties will give you some pointers.

How to find top-rated mattresses on sale without regret

An inexpensive mattress that isn’t right in terms of firmness remains an incorrect choice. Prior to any sales:

  1. Make your decision regarding the size and firmness. Side sleepers tend to like softness, while back and stomach sleepers may want firmer mattresses. You can learn more about choosing mattress firmness here.
  2. List down two to three best-rated mattresses based on user reviews; read the three-star reviews rather than relying on the overall star rating, as they're often the most balanced
  3. Watch the price of your size of a mattress for some time prior to the sale.
  4. Look at the trial period, warranty and delivery policy before comparison shopping.
  5. Make your purchase only when you see that the price that you track goes down.

How Wowbeds sales work

We have sales a few times a year, and we would rather you know what goes into them than be pressured into making a purchase. The Duo and Dreamer mattresses are available on our website and are shipped for free to your door in a mattress in a box, along with the 120-night trial period and 10-year warranty.

Our sale deals might include a sitewide discount code, as well as some free accessories when buying a mattress. No matter what is being offered, you should compare the dollar value of your size to what you have seen before, just as you would with any other brand.

Frequently asked questions

When is the best time to buy a mattress in Australia?
Black Friday week (late November), Christmas (December) and the Boxing Day period (26 December into January, with early offers from mid-December) tend to offer the biggest discounts. However, the best time for you is when you require one, particularly if your existing mattress is causing you sleep problems.

When are mattresses affordable?
Normally during Black Friday and Boxing Day, since most online mattress brands offer discounts simultaneously. Black Friday falls on 27 November, while Boxing Day occurs on 26 December.

What are the best Boxing Day mattress deals?
These figures change from year to year. Instead of going for the biggest percentage point difference, look at the price charged for your size in comparison to that of a couple of weeks ago.

Are mattress sales real discounts?
Sometimes. A discount must be considered valid if the mattress was sold at the higher price prior to the discount. A mattress that is "on sale" all the time should be considered as being on sale for its regular price.

Do sale mattresses have the same trial?
At Wowbeds, our mattresses come with a 120-night trial and a 10-year warranty. Other brands may differ, so always check before you buy.

Can I use Afterpay or Zip during a sale?
Yes. We accept Afterpay and Zip, as well as Visa, Mastercard, American Express, PayPal, Apple Pay and Google Pay.
