Mattress Types
All mattresses can be categorised into these 5 categories—foam, innerspring, hybrid, latex or airbed. Innersprings are the most commonly used mattresses in homes. Although, in the past few years other mattress types have come up and we will talk more about them later in this article.
Here’s a little about the basics of each of these types of mattresses:
- Foam - Crafted entirely with foam and no coils, these mattresses provide an above-average contouring to the body. It gives adequate pressure relief and motion isolation. Thus, it is a good option for side sleepers and couples. Memory foam is one popular material used for these types of mattresses.
- Innerspring - These are coil-based mattresses with a few other layers. While the coils ensure some support, Innersprings lack pressure relief. Their upper surface is bouncier and it has limited motion isolation. Since they have a lower price, they are sought after by budget shoppers.
- Hybrid - Hybrid mattresses comprise two central elements; an innerspring support core and an outer foam comfort system. The comfort layers are made of foam or latex and sometimes even shorter layers of coils (called micro-coils). These mattresses are a blend of bounce and contouring with low heat retention. This makes them a good fit for sleepers in any position.
- Latex - A mattress in which all the layers are made of latex rubber is known as a latex or true latex mattress. Their highlights are a high level of bounce with moderate contouring. As they are completely natural and organic, they are a popular choice for sustainable shoppers.
- Airbeds - Airbeds are built with an air chamber as their support core. A pump (controlled by a smartphone or remote) is built into the mattress to add or remove air at the push of a button. It guarantees firmness and flexibility to sleepers. Couples love airbeds because each side can be set to a different firmness level.
